Biography

Mahalia Gray Barrow is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama’s Capstone College of Nursing in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She received her Associate in science in Nursing degree from the Ira D. Pruitt Division of Nursing at the University of West Alabama. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama as well as her Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Clinical Nurse Leadership. Dr. Barrow earned her Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership in 2022 from the University of Alabama.

Dr. Barrow began her nursing career in 2009 as a bedside nurse in an Acute Cardiac Care Unit and Cardiac Intervention Unit. After earning her MSN in 2012, she joined the Capstone College of Nursing part-time as a clinical instructor from Fall 2012 to Spring 2014 while maintaining her bedside practice. In the Fall of 2014, she became the full-time Clinical Nurse Educator for the Cardiovascular Services Line at her facility until she joined the Capstone College of Nursing full-time in August 2017. Dr. Barrow teaches across many semesters in the undergraduate program and serves as a simulation specialist. She is also a member of the graduate faculty through serving on several dissertation committees.

Dr. Barrow’s research focus explores how curriculum prepares our nursing students to navigate conflict, mainly incivility, once they enter the nursing workforce. She believes in a proactive approach to aid in identifying and addressing incivility rather than a reactive one. She has presented her work nationally at many nursing conferences.

Dr. Barrow is a member of both local and national chapters of nursing organizations including Sigma Theta Tau, The National League for Nursing, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
