Dr. VanderMeer received a diploma from Druid City Hospital School of Nursing in 1962. She received her BSN from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1975. In 1980, she received her MSN from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in nursing administration. She received her DSN from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1997 in community health nursing, with a minor in health policy.

Dr. VanderMeer teaches courses in both the undergraduate and graduate program. In the undergraduate curriculum, she teaches Economics of Health Care in the NUR 308: Conceptual Foundations course. In the RN Mobility Tracks, she teaches the first course, Role Transitions and Community Health Nursing. In the graduate program, she teaches NUR 502: Issues in Community Health for Rural Populations. She also serves as Coordinator for the RN Mobility Tracks. Her research interests are eldercare, family caregivers, and the personal and financial costs of providing health, especially home care.

She is a member of the Alabama State Nurses' Association, Sigma Theta Tau, National League for Nursing, Alabama League for Nursing, Alabama Rural Health Association, and serves on the Board of the Alabama Gerontological Association.
