Dr. Barrett received her BSN from the Capstone College of Nursing in 1981. She received her MSN from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1985 and her DSN with a pediatric focus from The University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1996. She worked at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama from 1981 to 1985, working on the pediatric unit and pediatric intensive care. She joined the faculty of the Capstone College of Nursing in 1985 teaching pediatrics. During her time at the Capstone, she has worked in the pediatric population with students both in the hospital and community. She worked four years with students doing care management of children with chronic illness. Her research focus is children with special health care needs, with a focus on asthma. She has published in the areas of asthma, care management of children with special needs and diabetes. In 1998 she was awarded the University of Alabama’s Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award. In 1999 and 2000 she was awarded the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education Volunteer of the year awards. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Amercan Nurses’s Association, the Southern Nursing Research Society, the Rural Nurse Organization, and the Council for Exceptional Children. She serves as a reviewer for the Online Journal of Rural Nursing.
