Some sponsor identify cost sharing (matching) requirements in their proposal guidelines. This means that the University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing must provide some level of support for a project as a condition of receiving additional funding from the sponsor. It is important to begin the process of securing cost-sharing commitments long before a proposal is due. It is also crucial to document all cost-share during the life of the project. If UA CCN cannot demonstrate that it has met its cost-sharing obligations, sponsors may ask for some or all of their funding to be returned. Volunteered cost-sharing is routinely not supported by UA. The PI’s Department Chair and Dean, along with the Vice President for Research and Economic Development (VPRED), must have indicated approval on a Cost Sharing Authorization Form.
Under Federal research proposals, voluntary committed cost sharing is not expected. It cannot be used as a factor during the merit review of applications or proposals, but may be considered if it is both in accordance with Federal awarding agency regulations and specified in a notice of funding opportunity.
