Linda Olivet has dedicated herself to the nursing profession, The University of Alabama, and the community of Tuscaloosa. She has served in numerous capacities at The University of Alabama, including director of graduate studies and assistant dean at the Capstone College of Nursing. Now professor emeritus, she continues providing educational programs on nursing and health care through the College of Continuing Studies at The University of Alabama. Dr. Olivet’s career in nursing has spanned more than three decades. She quickly discovered her love of teaching nursing and has taught at the University of Alabama School of Nursing at UAB, the University of Hawaii, and the College of St. Teresa in Rochester, Minnesota. She was a forerunner in death education in the Southeast by being certified in death education and by coordinating educational programs on the subject and making presentations to professionals across many disciplines. She graduated with a B.S.N. as the outstanding graduating senior from The University of Alabama. She received her M.S.N. and D.S.N. from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Olivet was named the 1995 Alabama Professor of the Year by the prestigious Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, where she was selected from among nearly 550 faculty members nominated by their colleges and universities. She received the University of Alabama National Alumni Association Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award in 1987. Other awards include the Excellence in Writing Award by the Alabama State Nurses’ Association and the American Journal of Nursing, Outstanding Service to Nursing Education Award by the Alabama Affiliate of the American Heart Association and Outstanding Service to Hospice of West Alabama Award. She recently received the 2002–03 University Continuing Studies Education Association Region III Outstanding Education Faculty Award at the Region III meeting.
