Dr. Kristi A. Acker received her BSN from The University of Alabama in 1992 and her MSN from Mississippi University for Women in 1999.  In 2009, she was part of the inaugural DNP cohort to graduate from The University of Alabama at Birmingham.  Dr. Acker is ACCN certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.  As a registered nurse, she held certifications in both oncology and palliative care and in her advanced practice role, Dr. Acker holds specialty certifications as an Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner and is one of only eleven Advance Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurses in Alabama.   She has extensive training in leading difficult patient and caregiver conversations and has completed the American Cancer Society’s  VitalTalk ® workshop, the US Department of Health and Human Services Train-the-Trainer program on shared-decision making, holds STAR Oncology Rehabilitation Certification and has completed the core ELNEC Train-the-Trainer curriculum.

Dr. Acker has extensive clinical experience in palliative care and hematology/oncology.  She maintains her clinical practice with Oncology Associates of West Alabama, providing outpatient oncology services at the Manderson Cancer Center @ DCH in the Fayette, AL satellite clinic.  Her past clinical roles have included MedSurg nursing, hospice case management and oncology/chemotherapy administration.  Although she has devoted her advance practice career to oncology, Dr. Acker has maintained a commitment to advance palliative care, not only in end of life, but for all patients suffering with multiple chronic conditions.  On a state level, Dr. Acker serves on the Alabama Board of Nursing Advance Practice Advisory Committee and was appointed by the State of Alabama Medical Director to serve on the newly formed State Advisory Council on Palliative Care.  She also serves on the Advance Practice Advisory Council for the Alabama Board of Nursing.  Dr. Acker belongs to numerous professional organizations including the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau.

Dr. Acker resides in Northport, Alabama along with her husband, Stan.  Together, they have two daughters, Olivia who is a senior at UA and Abby Francis, a senior at Northside High School.
