Todd Smith, PhD, MBA, MSHA, RN
Dr. Smith earned an undergraduate degree in nursing (BSN) from Auburn University of Montgomery and a Master in Science in Healthcare Administration (MSHA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). After earning his MSHA in 1998, he served in an administrative residency program at a large healthcare system in Mobile, Alabama and later worked for that same health system as a manager in the oncology service line. From 2001 – 2016, Dr. Smith worked for UAB and served in a number of administrative leadership positions, mostly within UAB’s School of Medicine. In his last position at UAB, Dr. Smith was the administrative director for the UAB Montgomery-Selma Regional Medical Campus, which included numerous residency programs and clinics, as well as a complement of 3rd and 4th year medical students.
In 2011, Dr. Smith earned his PhD in Health Services Administration from UAB. His research interests include organizational configurations, strategic management, quality related to nursing homes, Medicaid, and leadership in healthcare systems and medical practice groups. Since 2003, he has taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in the field of health care management (statistics, research methods, leadership, healthcare finance, health care accounting, managed care, and health care systems). He has extensive experience teaching on-line courses using multiple Learning Management System platforms, as well as traditional face-to-face courses. Dr. Smith is also active in a number of professional organizations, including the Medical Group Management Association and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
