Biography
Dr. Carmichael is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Capstone College of Nursing. She is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner. She completed her undergraduate studies at Jefferson State Community College in 2003. Dr. Carmichael earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2005 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 2012 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 2025, she completed her Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing degree from the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
Her clinical career began in 2009 as a registered nurse at a Medical Surgical Unit at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where she worked for five years. After obtaining her nurse practitioner degree, Dr. Carmichael worked for seven years in an urgent care clinic setting. In 2019, Dr. Carmichael started working at the University of Alabama Student Health Center, where she currently continues to work as a nurse practitioner. In the spring and summer of 2026, Dr. Carmichael worked as an adjunct clinical faculty for the Master’s Entry to the Profession of Nursing Program (MEPN).
Her main areas of research are the prevention, testing, and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adolescents, young adults, and vulnerable populations, investigating human trafficking (HT), particularly helping survivors and educating healthcare providers and the community on the identification of HT victims. Other interests include health promotion and wellness, sexual risk behaviors.
Dr. Carmichael is a member of the Epsilon Omega Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS), the Nurse Practitioner Alliance of Alabama, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and West Alabama Nurse Practitioners.
