Biography

Dr. Evans Kyei is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Substance Use Research and Related Conditions (CSURRC) at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. He holds a PhD in Nursing with a concentration in health policy from the University of Massachusetts Boston. Dr. Kyei is dedicated to advancing innovative, community-based solutions to address opioid overdose, substance misuse, and broader public health disparities through research and policy engagement.

His research interests include opioid overdose prevention, community engagement strategies, health policy reform, housing stability, and aging in place. As a principal investigator, Dr. Kyei has led multiple studies examining the intersection of housing-related stress, health insurance coverage, and substance use patterns among diverse populations across the United States. His scholarship also has a global reach, including qualitative research on the experiences of mental health nurses and substance use treatment practices in Ghana.

Dr. Kyei is an active contributor to the nursing and public health fields, with numerous publications, peer-reviewed presentations, and service as a reviewer. He is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the Society of Behavioral Medicine, the Southern Nursing Research Society, and the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance Use and Addiction (AMERSA). His contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards and grants, including the Bollinger Grant and the Global Nursing Research Practice Grant.

With a strong commitment to advancing nursing science, Dr. Kyei’s work bridges research and practice to improve health outcomes, promote policy innovation, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration on urgent public health issues—especially those affecting vulnerable and justice-involved populations.
