Biography
Dr. Kay Scott is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Capstone College of Nursing. Dr. received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2011 and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) concentration in 2018 from Augusta University. She received Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification in 2024 from The University of Alabama. In addition to her academic role, she has extensive experience in primary care, mental health, addiction recovery, and urgent care. Her clinical background informs her teaching, allowing her to integrate real-world applications into the classroom.
Dr. Scott teaches advanced health assessment and serves as a DNP faculty advisor in the graduate nursing program, while alsoteaching and serving as the course leader for the undergraduate mental health nursing course. Her research interests include therapeutic communication, mental health, innovative nursing education strategies, and simulation. She is actively involved in ongoing research projects exploring use of therapeutic communication to develop therapeutic nurse-patient relationship, virtual learning strategies, and clinical judgment development in nursing students. Dr. Scott has presented her work at various conferences and remains committed to advancing nursing education through research and faculty service. She is also engaged in mentorship and community outreach initiatives, supporting both students and the broader healthcare community.
Dr. Scott is a member of American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Psychiatric Nurses Association, Alabama League for Nursing, and Alabama State Nurses Association. She serves as Vice-Chair for Faculty Practice Committee and Chair for Education Sub-Committee housed within Faculty Life Committee. She is also certified in Mental Health First Aid and emotional Connection, emPowerment, and Revitalization (eCPR).
