VPN (Virtual Private Network)
A VPN, or virtual private network, is a method used to add security and privacy to private and public networks. Essentially, it allows a user to connect from any internet connection in the world to the UA network, and the traffic is encrypted and secure. Once connected to the UA network via VPN, the user may then access files and resources as they would if they were in their office on campus.
When is a VPN Connection Necessary/Required
If you are NOT on the UA network and attempting to access UA files or information via the internet, you will need to make a VPN connection (i.e. if you’re not using your office PC or not using a PC located physically on campus that’s connected to the UA network). This requirement prevents unauthorized access to UA’s network and secures the transfer of data between your device and the UA network. If you are working on a UA device that is connected to the UA network, you DO NOT need to use a VPN connection.
Upgrading/Installing the New VPN Client
The previous legacy VPN system will be retired soon. If you’ve been using another method to make a VPN connection to the UA network other than with the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, you will need to perform this upgrade/install.

Best Practices
- You must have a stable, high-speed internet connection established BEFORE making the CiscoAnyConnect Secure Mobility connection (a dial-up connection may work, but will not provide an enjoyable experience). Cellular internet connections are acceptable, but connection issues/speed problems may affect VPN functionality.
- The Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client must be launched AFTER your device is connected to the internet and BEFORE you attempt to access any UA resources.
- When finished accessing UA resources, disconnect from the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. Remaining connected when not accessing UA resources may slow your PCs speed on the internet and will use a VPN client license that may be needed elsewhere on campus.
- When logging onto the VPN via the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, you’ll need to use your MyBama Username and Password. NOTE: These may be different than your email username and password and/or your server username and password.
- If you’re planning a trip and know that you’ll need to use the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client, it’s a good idea to test the connection a few days before your trip so if you have any problems they can be fixed before you leave.
